Hervey Bay 

Hervey Bay is a coastal city, located 289 kilometres (approximately 3 hours drive) north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. The city comprises approximately 2352 square kilometres, including 60 kilometres of protected ocean frontage, stretching from River Heads in the east and Burrum Heads in the west.

Hervey Bay has a number of suburbs which comprise the centre of the city. The towns include Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan. Pialba is the main commercial district, with a wide range of shopping facilities. Other towns and suburbs within the city include Burrum Heads, Torbanlea, Toogoom, Howard, Craignish, Dundowran, River Heads and Booral. Our sandy beaches generally face north, which is unusual for the east-coast of Australia.

Hervey Bay is located approximately 34 kilometres north east of Maryborough.

Population

In 1996 the city had a population of 42,391. (The 1991 population was 30,882). Hervey Bay is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia.

Attractions

The city has a multitude of natural and man-made attractions which draws visitors all year round.

The city is the gateway and one of the main entry points to the Heritage listed Fraser Island .

Hervey Bay is famous for its Humpback whales which visit us between August and October each year increasing numbers. Regular whale watch tours are conducted during this period of the year, to cater for over 50,000 visitors. Hervey Bay is known as the "Whale watch capital of the World".

Hervey Bay's former title, was the "Caravan Capital of Queensland". Hervey Bay received this title mainly due to the large number of caravan parks (over 20) located on the foreshore and within the city. Large numbers of caravans continue to visit our city each year. Backpackers are also regular visitors to the city. The city boasts accommodation for every budget.

Climate

We have a beautiful climate, which averages 28 degrees Celsius in Summer and 22 degrees Celsius in winter. Our climate and seaside location attracts visitors from all over Australia. Hervey Bay also attracts many visitors from the Southern Australian states during the winter months, as our climate is generally much more pleasant.

The waters of Hervey Bay are very sheltered and provide safe year-round swimming and boating. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, sailing, water-skiing, parasailing, scuba diving on our artificial reef, and other water sports.

Access to Hervey Bay

Maryborough is a major provincial Queensland city with a population of 24,868. Its location on the Bruce Highway, provides easy and convenient vehicle access to Hervey Bay. Trains pass through Maryborough, but do not come to Hervey Bay.

Visitors can also reach Hervey Bay by air with several daily scheduled 45 minute flights to and from Brisbane.

Hervey Bay has a modern boat harbour at the north-eastern extremity of the city, providing safe ocean access to the city.
